| Capital City Arts Initiative launches public programs with lecture/presentation by Santa Fe Museum of Fine Arts Curator Laura Addison. Laura Addison, Curator at the Santa Fe Museum of Fine Arts will give a slide lecture presentation at the Brewery Arts Center on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. Traditions/Technologies: New Mexico Art marks the debut of public programs for the Capital City Arts Initiative, an exciting new project focusing on contemporary art with exhibitions, public programs and artists’ residencies. The event continues the series "Nevada Neighbors: contemporary art practice in the West," hosted last year by the Brewery Arts Center. The lecture is free and open to the public. In her talk, curator Addison will address two dynamic aspects of contemporary art in New Mexico: traditions, as related to contemporary Native American and Hispanic art; and the intersection of art and science. New Mexico's cultural legacy has long been a hallmark of its art, as well as its tourist industry. Since the 1920s annual events like the Indian Market and Spanish Market, have impacted cultural production by providing an important marketplace for Native American and Hispanic artists. Today, a number of contemporary artists have found a balance between traditions and innovative expressions of their heritage. Concurrently, science has also had a hand in shaping New Mexico contemporary art. In 1943, scientists moved to Los Alamos to father the atomic bomb. Over time, artists have responded to New Mexico's unique role in developing the the Nuclear Age. In what promises to be a fascinating talk, Addision will explore the art and artists of this unique region of the West. A companion essay by Laura Addison will be on line on the Arts Initiative's web site at http://www.arts-initiative.org/live/neighbors/essays/laura_addison.html. In addition to her public talk, Ms. Addison will give a presentation to art students at Carson High School. Nevada Neighbors is funded in part by the Nevada Humanities Committee, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Carson City Redevelopment Authority, the Calhoun Foundation, and by BrAG, the Arts Intitiative's 'Brilliant Advisory Group.' ########### 33 ########### Calendar
