Neighbors Series Continues with Outsider Art Lecture by Kim Russell
Nevada Neighbors, Capital City
Arts Initiative’s lecture series
on contemporary art practice in the West, continues with a lecture by
Kim Russell titled "From the Las Vegas Strip: Outsider Art." Ms.
Russell will speak at the Carson City Library on Wednesday, September
22 at 7:00 p.m. There will be a reception immediately preceding the talk
at the library beginning at 6:15 p.m. The library is located at 900 North
Roop Street, Carson City. The lecture and reception are free and open
to the public.
Kim Russell will discuss outsider art and its historical context in a
talk illustrated by slides of the extensive International House of Blues
Foundation's [IHOBF] Outsider Folk Art collection. The IHOBF’S
extensive collection centers on self-taught artists who use inexpensive,
found, and recycled materials to make creative and innovative artworks.
Ms. Russell will also relate outsider art practice to both contemporary
art and the broader cultural expressions of the culture.
Kim Russell is the Program Director for the International House of Blues
Foundation, an arts education non-profit organization, in Las Vegas,
Nevada. Ms. Russell received her B.A. 1979 from Chapman University in
Communications and Theater in Orange, California. As a theater artist,
playwright, producer, arts educator, historian and community activist,
she focuses on African Americans, music, women and visual artists known
as ‘outsider artists.’ Recently, the Nevada NOW Equality
Award recognized Ms. Russell’s contributions to preserving women’s
