Arts Center Visual Arts Initiative FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Brewery Arts Center Visual Arts Initiative presents San Francisco Art Institute Curator Karen Moss Lecture "Topographies" Karen Moss, Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at San Francisco's prestigious San Francisco Art Institute presents "Topographies," a slide/lecture at the Brewery Arts Center on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. Brewery Arts is located in downtown Carson City at 449 West King Street. The lecture is free and open to the public. The event is the second of four lectures in the series "Nevada Neighbors: contemporary art practice in the West." Curator Moss' talk will focus on California artists whose work expands conventional notions of landscape and map. Working in painting, sculpture, photography, installation and digital media, they create a range of 'topographies' from specific landscapes to imagined and invented locations. Karen Moss comments, "The artists share a common interest in both mapping and creating a sense of place. They have an obsession with the aesthetics of surface or space, often rendered in abstract, constructed, or even virtual forms." Ms. Moss adds: "In traditional dictionary definitions, the word topography refers to the physical or natural features of a place or region, an object or entity, and their structural relationships. Today, the notion of topography as a fixed entity has blurred, expanded and morphed into multiple meanings, traversing subjects ranging from art and architecture to cartography and geography, from medicine and metallurgy, to other forms of science and technology." A companion essay by Karen Moss is on line on the Brewery's Visual Arts Initiative's web site at http://www.breweryarts.org/vai/live/neighbors/essays/karen_moss.html. In addition to her public talk, Ms. Moss, a member of the faculty of the graduate curatorial studies program at the Art Institute, will give a presentation to art students and visit the gallery at UNR. Nevada Neighbors is funded in part by a grant from the Nevada Humanities Committee and by BrAG, The Brewery Arts Center Visual Arts Intitiative Advisory Group. ########### 33 ########### Calendar
