FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"Signs of Life: Murals and Spraycan Art"

Jim Prigoff, a nationally recognized authority on public murals and "spraycan art," will present an illustrated talk at the Carson City Library on Wednesday, March 7. The talk is part of "Nevada Neighbors," the Capital City Arts Initiative’s lecture series on contemporary art.

The presentation will take place at 7:00 p.m. There will be a reception at 6:15 at the library prior to the event. The library is located at 900 North Roop Street. The lecture and reception are free and the public is cordially invited.

Mr. Prigoff's presentation will explore the fascinating culture of public murals and their producers, focussing on the practice of spraycan street art. For his talk, he will draw from his extensive collection of photographs documenting works from across the globe.

Mr. Prigoff studied at MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He
has been photographing art in public space for over thirty years. His books on murals include Spraycan Art, Painting the Towns-Murals of California. His photographs were included in the 2000 exhibition "100 Years of California Art" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 2001, the Los Angeles-based Social and Political Art Resource Center [SPARC] presented "Painting and Politics," an exhibition of his work.

He has been invited to speak at museums and universities worldwide. His Carson City Library talk is presented as part of "CAP," CCAI's year-long program highlighting artists working outside of traditional art venues. While in northern Nevada, Mr. Prigoff will document CAP artist Erk Burke's mural in Carson City.
The mural, located in the alley between 1801 and 1805 Carson Street, was inspired by Carson City bicyclist Glen Lucky.
